Nashville, Tenn. (Top40 Charts/ Webster & Associates) Country music legend and Grand Ole Opry member Charlie Daniels, along with his wife Hazel and The Nashville Palm host "Charlie Daniels Scholarships for Heroes," a charity event benefiting Sentinels of Freedom and veteran students of Lipscomb University, on Tuesday, October 9. They will be joined by special celebrity guests Sal Gonzales and
Aaron Lewis.
The benefit, emceed by GAC's Storme Warren, begins at 6:00 p.m. with a VIP cocktail reception, with doors opening and the silent auction beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Palm will serve a signature "Surf & Turf" dinner at 7:00 p.m., followed by the program and live auction at 8:00 p.m. Live art by Randall Hedden will be among the unique items featured. Special guest Mark Green MD FACEP will be honored that evening. After graduating from West Point with a degree in business, Mark Green served as an infantry officer, eventually commanding a rifle company in the famed 82nd Airborne Division. While in command, his father's life was saved by a surgeon, profoundly impacting him and leading him to seek a degree in medicine. Following his residency in emergency medicine Dr. Green was assigned as the flight surgeon for the 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne). There Mark served alongside some of the nation's most elite warriors on two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom and one in Operation Enduring Freedom. He participated in planning and providing medical coverage for some of OIF and OEF's most covert operations. He is a recipient of the Bronze Star, The Air Medal with "V" device for Valor, The Air Medal, and the Combat Medical Badge. He is the Author of "A Night with Saddam" - A Special Ops Flight Surgeon's Interview with Saddam Hussein on the night of his capture and the mission which led to their meeting.
About Charlie Daniels:
Charlie Daniels, known for his fiddle playing, is a music icon that has been performing and writing songs for more than five decades. He formed the Charlie Daniels Band in 1972, creating straightforward country music including the number one hit, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." The CDB recently took a starring role in ESPN's Monday Night Football "open" before the Peyton Manning & the Denver Broncos game in Georgia (Sept. 17). About Sal Gonzales:
Shortly after completing boot camp at Camp Pendleton, Sal Gonzales found himself on the front lines in Iraq. As a gunner behind a .50 caliber machine gun, Sal's job quickly became protecting the welfare of his squad. During his short time on the front lines Sal's Humvee was hit seven times by roadside bombs. The seventh time was a direct hit and during the explosion, Sal suffered a wound that resulted in an amputation of his lower left leg. Equally as difficult, Sal lost his good friend and Lieutenant, Matt Lynch. Sal regained consciousness stateside at the
National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. After a total of 12 months of recovery Sal received his medical discharge. Since that time, Sal has resided in Nashville while honing his singing chops, writing songs and assisting fellow veterans on their personal roads to recovery. "
Heroes" is the first and only song that Sal currently plays about his experience as a
Marine at war. Sal most recently completed a five song EP to share with fans and industry folks alike. He remains focused on his music and building a following that appreciates him not for his military service, but for the quality of his music and the message of his songs.
