LISBOA, Portugal ('Rock In Rio' announcement) - If Rock & Roll can save the world, Rock in Rio 2004 might just be the way to do it! On May 28, Rock in Rio, the world's largest music event, launches in Lisboa, Portugal. The week-long festival features hugely successful artists including Paul McCartney, Britney Spears, Sting, Alicia Keys, Evanescence, and Peter Gabriel. Five percent of Rock in Rio's proceeds - an estimated $1.24 million - will fund Plan USA's Child Survival programs, which serve young children in developing countries around the world. Of that, $250,000 has been pre-committed to Plan regardless of ticket sales. With 70 acts and 120 hours of music, the event is expected to draw a total of 500,000 fans. Rock in Rio creator Roberto Medina connected with Plan USA after the charity played a role in "About Schmidt," the 2002 movie starring Jack Nicholson and featuring "Ndugu," a Tanzanian boy modeled after a real child sponsored by Plan USA (then known as Childreach).
