Shaw was one of the most popular British female singers of the '60s (known as the 'barefoot pop princess' because of her habit of not wearing shoes on stage). Coincidentally, she had worked in the Ford factory in her hometown Dagenham a few years prior to the 1968 incident recalled in the film, when the female workers took to the picket lines to ensure fair working rights for women. By then, Shaw had already become a star-dubbed the Dagenham Diva-with her 1964 rendition of '(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me.'
That recording, also included on the soundtrack album, hit No 1 in the U.K. She would later become the first U.K. act to win the Eurovision Song Contest. Today, Shaw remains an enormously popular musical figure in the U.K. The Nigel Cole-directed Made In Dagenham was released on November 19, 2010, in New York and L.A., and subsequently other cities, by Sony Pictures Classics.
