Melee (pronounced May-lay) is riding a wave of success overseas where "Built to Last," the lead-off single from their major-label debut album "Devils & Angels," has climbed to No. 2 on radio airplay charts in Germany, Holland, and Belgium. The single, which is sitting at No. 25 on the Euro Pop charts, is also No. 10 on airplay charts in Switzerland and No. 30 in Sweden.
The Orange County, CA-bred Melee, which is vocalist/keyboardist Chris Cron, guitarist/vocalist Ricky Sans, bassist Ryan Malloy, and drummer Mike Nader, is also enjoying major success in Southeast Asia, where "Built to Last" is a Top 5 hit in Jakarta, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, and Singapore. The band has also become stars in Japan where "Built to Last" and the album's second single "Imitation" are bonafide hits. The band is now gearing up to release their third single in Japan, "Frequently Baby."
"We went to Japan last fall and there were people waiting at the airport for us," Cron said in a recent interview on KOCE TV's "Inside OC" program. "We'd never had that experience before." Released by Warner Bros. Records on April 3rd, 2007, "Devils & Angels" has sold more than 98,153 copies internationally.
To continue building on its buzz, Melee will spend the summer performing at multiple festivals in Europe and Asia, including stops at the Rockin Park Festival in Holland and the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, and launch a tour of the U.K., where "Devils & Angels" will be released in June, with the Rocket Summer in July. Produced by 2006 & 2007 Grammy-Award nominee for "Producer of the Year" Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Chris Daughtry, All-American Rejects), "Devils & Angels" displays Melee's flair for classic pop hooks, lifting melodies, and feverish guitars. They were tapped as a band to "Keep Your Eye On" by Alternative Press, which praised the album's "polished, piano-driven rock with a splash of goofball charm."
