NASHVILLE, TN. (Raul Malo Official Website) - Raul Malo's new solo CD, "You're Only Lonely," an intimate collection of ten timeless covers and one new original, has almost overnight become the most critically acclaimed romantic record of the year. Released just two weeks ago, the album has garnered rave reviews from some of the nation's toughest critics, including being selected by People magazine as their CRITIC'S CHOICE for this week (Aug. 14 issue).
Calling the record "intensely romantic," People lauded the CD with a rare 4-Star review.
Reminiscent of the smooth, classic stylings of Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, Malo's dreamy, mood-setting album is already being hailed by critics as one of the year's best releases.
Best known as the former frontman and creative force behind Grammy-winning group The Mavericks, Malo has long been respected for his impressive vocal abilities. "The purity, clarity and strength of his voice is simply unmatched by any other singer out there today," wrote Billboard magazine. Newhouse News Service declared Malo, "One of the best singers in the world. He's right up there with anyone in the rock era, and that includes the singer to whom he is most often compared, Roy Orbison."
"You're Only Lonely" pairs Malo with producer Peter Asher (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel) and includes a fearless cover of the Etta James classic "At Last," as well as "Tomorrow Night" (originally recorded by Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and others), "Games That Lovers Play" (originally recorded by Wayne Newton), "Secret Heart" (Ron Sexsmith), and Randy Newman's "Feels Like Home" (with guest vocals by Martina McBride). Nestled seamlessly among these and other classics is the Malo-penned original, "For You," a joyous Latin-flavored composition that ties this collection in with many of his best-loved previous recordings.
