(Kix Brooks Official Website) - Never mind having the No 1 Billboard and
Radio & Records single with "Play Something Country," or Billboard's No 1 album for two weeks in Hillbilly Deluxe, which is getting the best reviews of Brooks & Dunn's storied career, sometimes a superstar guitarslinger/singer/songwriter gets a little teed off. Thankfully, when that superstar happens to be Kix Brooks, the crop-dusting, stage-diving half of 4-time Entertainers of the Year, getting teed off involves 3-woods, 5-irons and putters rather than tantrums.
Tomorrow - Sept. 27 - the Louisiana-born-and-raised musician will be teeing it up in some fast company, joining the legendary Arnold Palmer, long hitter John Daly and LPGA sensation Natalie Gulbis for a little good-natured competition at Atunyote (ah-dune-yoo) Golf Club at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York, 30 miles east of Syracuse.
"You know they've got me coming for my golf game," teases the man who plays in almost every city his sold-out Deuces Wild Tour rolls into. "I mean, come on… John Daly has been waiting to hear my thoughts on the power swing."
The format is fairly straightforward. There are 18 skins - one per hole - up for grabs. Lowest score gets the skin. If there's a tie between two or more players, no skin gets awarded - and the skin carries over to the next hole, making it both nerve-wracking and possible for Brooks to walk away the big winner.
"Well, I'm not counting on anything more than a fun day, playing what I've been told is a great Tom Fazio golf course with some amazing golfers," says the man who will co-host the 39th annual Country Music Association Awards, live from New York City's Madison Square Garden. "To get to play golf with Arnold Palmer, who I grew up watching on TV, or these white-hot-right-now players like John Daly and Natalie Gulbis, well, that's a pretty cool thing for a guy that plays pretty good okay golf, if you know what I mean…"
No word on whether or not Daly might turn up to play some guitar on "Mama Don't Get Dressed Up For Nothing" or "Rock My World (Little Country Girl)" as Brooks & Dunn's fall Deuces Wild Tour - with Muzik Mafia mavens Big & Rich and those wild'n'crazy Warren Brothers - rolls on. But with dates between now and October 30th, anything could happen.
"We've got our friends in the world of sports," laughs Brooks. "But it's funny, other than Dale (Earnhardt, who swapstarred in the "Honky Tonk Truth" video), they pretty much stay in the wings - and leave the jumping around to me. Regardless, you just never know who's gonna show up at one of our shows, or what they'll do… and we like it like that."
