 ROME, Italy, (La Scala Official Website) - Italian opera singer Renata Tebaldi, who was a great rival to Maria Callas, has died aged 82. Renata Tebaldi was considered one of the greatest divas in the post-World War II era, and was once a rival to the legendary singer Maria Callas. Born in Pesaro, central Italy in 1922, she was greatly admired for the beauty and purity of her voice, and her elegant stage presence. Her most memorable roles on stage included Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme," as Cio-Cio-san in "Madama Butterfly" and as Violetta in a special staging of Verdi's "La Traviata." Renata Tebaldi, who'd been ill for some time, died at her home in San Marino.
