HI Chicago Hosts The Recycled Instruments Orchestra Of Cateura At The 10th Annual Latino Music Festival
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) They are a truly inspiring group of young people and they can teach us all about overcoming adversity.

HI Chicago, The J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Hostel, is proud to join the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago, the Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago and The Joyce Foundation to bring The Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura to Chicago during the 10th Annual Latino Music Festival. The Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura is comprised of young adults who live in the BaƱado Sur community, located next to the Cateura landfill, in Asuncion, Paraguay and play instruments created from garbage reclaimed from the landfill.

The orchestra's instruments include violins, violas, cellos, double bass, guitars, flutes, saxophones, trumpets and percussion instruments and their visual appearance belies the depth of sound they produce. The orchestra plays classical music, folk music, Paraguayan and Latin American music, works by the Beatles and Frank Sinatra, film sound scores and symphonic heavy metal, among others. The Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura will be performing for HI Chicago hostel guests on Thursday, November 19 and for the general public on Sunday, November 23 at the Merle Reskin Theater. HI Chicago is sponsoring The Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura by providing complimentary lodging for the musicians throughout the festival.

"As a nonprofit organization that builds tolerance through intercultural communication and exchange we believe it's important to share the story of the Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura with our travelers and our community," said HI USA Board Chair, Glenn Azuma. "They are a truly inspiring group of young people and they can teach us all about overcoming adversity."

The Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura provides children and teenagers who live in precarious and vulnerable conditions with an educational program that helps them learn, stay in school, develop their creativity and have access to a better future. The orchestra has been featured on 60 Minutes and Tedx Talks and is the subject of a soon to be released documentary Landfill Harmonic.

HI Chicago, The J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Hostel, is part of Hostelling International USA (HI USA), a nonprofit organization founded on an enduring belief in the power of travel to foster a deeper understanding of people, places, and the world around. HI USA promotes a dynamic community of global citizens who have the wisdom and humanity to actively make the world a better place.
