Loretta Lynn continues to solidify her reputation for trendsetting and crossing genre boundaries with MTV adding into rotation her new video for "Portland Oregon" from her acclaimed album, Van Lear Rose. In a week filled with honors and accolades, Lynn was awarded the Americana
Music Awards trophies for Album of the Year (Van Lear Rose) and Artist of the Year and featured on SPIN magazine's 2004 "The Cool List" at No 10.
Filmed in a historic tavern in downtown Memphis, Tenn, the clip for "Portland Oregon," directed by Sophie Muller, features Lynn's album band, The Do Whaters. Before Lynn takes the stage in a signature pink ball gown, urban images of Portland flash through the video intro leading viewers back to a night of romance and sloe gin fizz. MTV will begin spinning the video for "Portland Oregon" on Monday, October 4.
In the current October issue of SPIN, Lynn is named as one of Rock's Top 40 trendsetters on "The Cool List." Recognition on SPIN's annual list comes on the heels of Lynn's recent nomination for the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize. Among the Top 10 finalists on the Shortlist are Franz Ferdinand, Dizzee Rascal, Nellie McKay and Wilco. The Shortlist Music Prize winner will be announced in mid-November.
Lynn will be honored as a BMI ICON at the performing rights organization's 52nd annual Country Awards. The gala awards and dinner will be held November 8 at BMI Nashville's Music Row offices. Lynn joins a distinguished list of BMI ICONs, including country songwriter/artists Bill Anderson and Dolly Parton; pop songwriting master Brian Wilson; R&B legends Chuck Berry, James Brown, Bo Diddley, Al Green, Isaac Hayes and Little Richard; Motown songwriting trio Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland and blues/rock/soul artist Van Morrison.
On Friday (September 24), Lynn was honored with two trophies for Album of the Year (Van Lear Rose) and Artist of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Lynn, who was unable to attend due a previously confirmed concert date, pre-recorded a video taped acceptance for the ceremony saying, "This album means a lot to me and 'Van Lear Rose' was written about my mommy. I'm so proud you all voted for it."
